In late May 2025, thanks in part to a generous grant from the Nevada Arts Council, The Art Box team journeyed north to the historic town of Tuscarora for an immersive visit and a special series of podcast episodes recorded at the world-renowned Tuscarora Pottery School. We’re deeply grateful for the Council’s support in helping us explore and share the creative spirit thriving in this remote Nevada haven.
Tucked away in the high desert of northeastern Nevada, the Tuscarora Pottery School has drawn artists from around the globe for decades. Founded in the 1960s by ceramicist Dennis Parks, the school transformed the quiet ghost town into a seasonal hub for potters and creatives seeking solitude, inspiration, and community. With its rustic setting, breathtaking landscapes, and deep-rooted tradition in wood and gas-fired kilns, Tuscarora continues to celebrate experimentation, craftsmanship, and artistic connection under wide desert skies.
As a guest, I had the rare pleasure of observing the workshop firsthand—watching in awe as potters shaped clay with quiet focus, then gathered with excitement to open the kiln and see the magic revealed in their finished pieces. There was a shared rhythm to the days: creative work in the studio, shared meals cooked and eaten together, and stories traded over coffee or under starlight. Bonds formed quickly, and the sense of community was as powerful as the art itself. Special thanks to Jerry Hendershot for his thoughtful leadership and guidance throughout the session. I left with a full heart, a deeper appreciation for the craft—and a firm decision to return next year, this time as a student.
Links to each episode in this series will be added here as they’re released. Stay tuned, and join us in celebrating the people, pottery, and place that make Tuscarora unforgettable.
